Late 18th century; remodelled 1847. 3-storey and attic, 3-bay office with shop at ground. Painted render. Built out as shop at ground with pair of panelled doors flanking plate glass 3-pane shop window; entablature and blocking course with amphorae (2 missing at centre). Architraved windows to upper floors. Cornice with cast-iron frieze; parapet with 4 piers and vases. 3 large pedimented dormers.
Gabled painted sandstone elevation to lane with loading doors at centre.
Timber windows; at 1st floor 12 fixed panes, with casement to centre; 2-pane at 2nd floor. Mansard roof; ashlar coped skews, stone stacks; grey slates.
INTERIOR: top-lit saloon to rear.
Adapted in 1847 as picture gallery and showrooms for Scotland's leading house painter, decorator and colour theorist D R Hay; shopfront restored in 1980s. A Group with Nos 30-60 (even nos) George Street as a significant surviving part of the original fabric of Edinburgh's New Town, one of the most important and best preserved examples of urban planning in Britain.
