George Smith and Henry Hardy. Mid 19th century. 3-storey tenement with shops to ground. Polished ashlar with raised dressings. Cill courses and cill blocks; deep cornice. 5-storey down to Merchant Street level.
8-pane glazing to timber sash and case windows with horns. Slate roof. End stacks. Coped skews and skewputs. Clay cans. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
Of simple design with refined Classical detailing, this commercial and residential tenement block is an important and intergral work of this key Edinburgh streetscape. George Smith was appointed to the post of architect to the Edinburgh Improvement Commissioners in 1834. Nos 31-39 George IV Bridge were constructed soon afterwards. Smith set up practice in Edinburgh in 1827. Nos 31-39 George IV Bridge are part of a run that continues at Nos 46-55 (see separate listing - HBNUM 28893) although interspersed with the St Augustine's Church (see separate listing).
