Earlier 19th century with late 19th century piend-roofed extension to rear. Single storey (2 storeys to rear), 3-bay L-plan cottage with gable-head stacks. Painted coursed sandstone rubble with droved quoins and dressings. 2 steps approaching central 2-leaf timber-boarded door with border-glazed inner door and small-paned fanlight. Irregular fenestration to rear.
4-pane timber sash and case windows to S (front); some non-traditional glazing to rear. Corniced brick stacks (stack to left rendered); clay cans. Graded grey slates. Ashlar coped skews.
Spylaw street is one of the main streets of old Colinton village. Although few of the buildings are of exceptional architectural merit, together they form a very picturesque group, which gives this part of Colinton its distinctly unique and village-like character. This traditional cottage is of significant value to streetscape.
