Description

Ruin, S. wall only remains. Lower parts late 16th century, Kennedy panel dated 1635, reconstructed c. 1706-1715 and again John Baxter 1781-5, retaining only square tower with circular S.E. angle tower forming 4-storey U-plan block 130' x 75' open to E. with twin 3-window bows; W. front 7-window, centre 3 recessed. Became ruinous after 1801, all demolished 1851 except S. wall, 4-storey rubble built reduced to 1/2-storey at W. end. Remains of stairhall at W. end with fluted stone pilasters.

Statement of Interest

A fine, and except for the castle itself, remarkably complete early 18th century layout. The old castle of Ardgith was purchased 1706 by Baillie James Gordon a wealthy Edinburgh merchant. The whole of the present layout appears to date from his time. Sold 1752 to George 3rd Earl of Aberdeen and passed to his 2nd son Hon. Wm. Gordon who let it become a ruin. Sold to Sir F.E.R. Becker 1919 and to Sir Edward Reid 1929.
