Description

A B MacDonald, City Engineer, 1894-8, as museum with huge winter garden near full-width of rear wall to SW. Museum is in Renaissance style. Elaborate, 3-storey and symmetrical, with advanced centre and ends, red ashlar, rich sculptured detail, ground floor arched and channelled, Corinthian order at 1st floor and balustrade, statuary at 2nd floor and centre roof dome over.

French roofs (slated) over ends. Grand central stair within has art nouveau detailing to wrought-iron balustrades.

WINTER GARDEN: is massive, fully-glazed above red ashlar base, cast-iron and steel framing, curved end (D-ended on plan), decorative cast-iron columns and brackets inside, latticed steelwork; paired stair/lift shaft turrets built 1988-90 against museum rear wall, reproducing brick and red sandstone of original.
