St Mary's is the largest medieval parish church in Scotland. The choir, crossing and transepts were badly damaged in the seige of Haddington in 1548/49. The exterior still has holes caused by gunfire at this time. In 1561 a wall was built accross the end of the nave forming the parish church and leaving the rest to ruin. This remained to 1971/73 when the ruin was restored and the church made whole again. The convincing vaults over the choir etc.are in fact fibreglass.
