Clay Loan breaks the old main street and climbs steeply to the west to Gallow Ha, the former place of public execution in Kirkwall. Originally the Common or South Loan, it takes its present name from its use as source of mortar for Kirkwall houses. It is abutted to the south by a similar cottage, (number 8) and forms a crowstepped M-gable to the common Victoria Street elevation. The pair belonged to Robert Strange from 17?? until 1770. To the east stand two similarly dated cottages (Numbers 10 and 12) the ensemble forming a B-group.
