Description

Early 18th century. 2-storey and attic, 5-bay, near symmetrical, rectangular-plan crowstepped gabled house, abutting further house (also Number 43, listed separately) forming L-plan on NW and SW sides of courtyard respectively, opening onto Albert Street. Roughly squared, harl-pointed rubble with painted sandstone dressings. Plain margins to openings.

SE (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: architraved 2-leaf, part-glazed timber panelled door at ground in bay to centre; window at 1st floor above. Window at ground and 1st floors in bay to right. Window at each floor in bay to outer right. Blocked window at ground in bay to left; window at 1st floor above. Window at each floor in bay to outer left.

NE (ALBERT) STREET) ELEVATION: 2-bay. Blocked window at ground In bay to left; window at each floor in each bay remaining; gablehead stack above.

NW (REAR/SIDE) ELEVATION: irregular, 4-bay, (2-bay, crowstepped gabled block to outer right) with single storey screen wall to outer right. 2-bay block to left: deep-set boarded door at ground in bay to centre. Window at each floor in bay to right. Window at ground and 1st floor in bay to left. 2-bay gabled block to right: bipartite window at ground in bay to left; window at 1st floor. Window at ground in bay to right; attic window above; gablehead stack. Single window to screen wall to outer right.

Predominantly 4-pane timber sash and case windows. Grey slate roof; stone ridge; stone skews; thack stane; rubble coped gablehead stack to NW; harled, corniced gablehead stack to NE; predominantly cast-iron rainwater goods.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1998.

BOUNDARY WALLS: low sandstone walls along Albert Street, enclosing courtyard.

Statement of Interest

Formerly home to Partrick Traill. With its gabled end facing the street, the principal elevation forms an attractive courtyard opening off the main thoroughfare; the courtyard retains its traditional Caithness flagstones. The house remains intact in form and its plain symmetrical frontage of 5-bays renders it a substantial town house. 43 Albert Street (II) is the older of the two properties.
