Description

17th century; rebuilt later 20th century. 2-storey and attic, 3-bay dwelling house. Harled, smooth margins.

N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: central door; windows in outer bays at ground and 1st floors; 3 attic windows.

E ELEVATION: adjoining building.

S ELEVATION: not seen 2000.

W ELEVATION: adjoining building.

Modern timber sash and case glazing. Slate roof; 3 large modern roolights; crowstepped gables; gablehead stacks.

INTERIOR: not seen 2000.

Statement of Interest

The steeply pitched roof and crowstepped gables are characteristics of 17th century dwelling houses. The step up to the front door was more typical of later 17th century architecture and became increasingly common in the 18th century. Thus it is likely that this house dated from the later 17th century. The windows have all been enlarged, originally the openings would have been quite small and filled with small panes of glass. Larger windows only became fashionable in the later eighteenth-century and large panes were only available from the mid-nineteenth century. This house, together with its neighbour No 16, marked the start / end of Queensferry, which at the end of the 18th century was only ? mile long.
