38 AND 40 ALFRED STREET: later 18th century with later alterations. Single storey and attic irregular 6-bay rectangular-plan former pair of cottages (now converted as one with garage to W end) with walled quay around gabled E end; 46 ALFRED STREET sited to rear, (S). Re-pointed random rubble to E end; roughly coursed rubble to W. Some ashlar lintels.
N (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: bays grouped 5-1. 5-bay group to left: deep-set modern boarded door bays to left and right of centre at ground; window in each alternate bay. Window in bay to centre and in bay to outer right above. Wide modern garage door at ground in single bay to outer right; window, offset to left at 1st floor above.
S (REAR) ELEVATION: regularly fenestrated.
E (SEAWARD) ELEVATION: single bay gabled wall. Window at each floor to right of centre; gablehead stack above.
Replacement timber framed windows. Graded Caithness slate to E end; purple Welsh slate to W end; stone ridge; rooflights to S pitch; coped rubble gablehead and ridge stack; uPVC rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: not seen, 1997.
SLIPWAY QUAY AND DERRICK: low rubble wall around Caithness slabbed quay to E; non-operational iron boat derrick to NE angle; small slipway along N border of quay.
46 ALFRED STREET: contemporary single storey and attic 2-bay near square-plan crowstepped gabled store sited to S of main cottage, (rear walls set close) with quay around E end, slipway and derrick. Roughly coursed rubble, remnants of harling to E and W gable ends.
S (ENTRANCE) ELEVATION: boarded door at ground to left. Blocked window at each floor to right.
W (SIDE) ELEVATION: blocked opening at ground to right. Window set high to left of gable.
E (SEAWARD) ELEVATION: window set wide to left at ground; window to left of crowstepped gable above; gablehead stack.
12-pane timber sash and case window to W; blocked small windows elsewhere. Caithness slate; stone ridge; cement skews to W; corniced rubble stack to E.
INTERIOR: not seen, 1997.
QUAY, SLIPWAY AND DERRICK: rectangular-plan Caithness-slabbed quay to E; rubble slipway along S border; seemingly operational boat derrick to SE angle.
Unusually complete arrangement of cottages, store, quays, derricks and slipways.
