Description

Circa 1860. 2-storey farmhouse with single storey wing and rear extension, asymmetrical with irregular L-plan. Main elevations in squared and snecked rubble of red-brown sandstone, others coursed rubble. Margins flush and chamfered, mostly stugged and droved.

FRONT (S) ELEVATION: Asymmetrical, 3-bays. Advanced gable to W, with rectangular bipartite bay window to ground floor under monopitched roof, bipartite window also to 1st floor, stone mullion. Front doorway central, set back with porch in angle of return, topped with continuation of gabled roof pitch. Door itself 4-panelled, flanked by narrow single lights above external dado, topped by high-arched single-pane fanlight. To E, tripartite canted bay window to ground, roofed in pitched and moulded stone below 1st floor gableheaded dormer breaking eaves.

W ELEVATION: single window to ground, flanked by doorway slapped to provide access for modern lean-to conservatory. 2 gableheaded dormers break eaves at 1st floor.

E WING: single windows central to S, E, and N elevations.

REAR (S) ELEVATION: walls to main house blank. 2 low piended outshots with doorway and 4 window openings.

Fenestration timber sash and case, mostly 4-pane, but 8-pane to E wing.

Roofs in ungraded grey Welsh slates, all eaves and verges projecting, except in rear outshots. Elaborately fretted decorative bargeboarding to main gables, dormers and porch. 4 ashlar stacks, with moulded projecting copes, cans truncated or removed. Decorative rainwater hoppers.

GATES: gatepiers of roughly dressed sandstone, copped by heraldic lions. Heavy decorative cast-iron gates.

Statement of Interest

Monkrigg Steading adjacent has an interesting design including cartshed arches and dovecot tower with spire over entrance arch, with datestone 1863. Converted to housing 1970s.
