Description

Earlier 19th century with later additions and alterations. 2-storey 3-bay house with 2-storey single bay addition to E. Sandstone rubble with droved dressings.

S ELEVATION: modern boarded door to centre with plate glass rectangular fanlight; window at 1st floor above. Window to each floor of flanking bays. Addition to E set back and with tripartite window at ground (modern enlargement; concrete lintel) with timber mullions; window at 1st floor.

W ELEVATION: gabled end to right with window at ground of bay to right and window at 1st floor of bay to left. 2-storey addition to left with modern platformed sunroom projecting at ground to W with timber mullioned bipartite window at 1st floor.

N ELEVATION: irregular. Modern platformed glazed entrance addition at ground to centre. Gabled 2-storey projection to right. 2-storey addition to left with single storey further gabled addition projecting to N to right of bay to left.

Plate glass sash and case windows. Slate roof with ashlar coped skews and ashlar corniced stacks to gableheads to W and E. 2-pane 19th century skylight to right of centre to N.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1996.

BOUNDARY WALLS, QUADRANT WALLS, PIERS AND GATE: rubble wall to S, forming terrace. Rubble coped quadrant wall to W with simple railings with square-plan coped piers flanking and wrought-iron cross-bar gate with cast-iron piers flanking.

Statement of Interest

The house is sited to W of Stuartslaw steading (see separate listing), for which assocation it is listed. Stuartslaw was part of the Blackadder estate.
