Description

Late 19th century. 2-storey, 3-bay, asymmetrical gabled, Tudor- detailed house. Squared and snecked sandstone to front, rubble stone to sides and rear, ashlar dressings, moulded string course above ground floor, quoined ends.

W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: central entrance door in pointed arch surround with deep splayed reveals and hoodmould, bipartite lancets at 1st floor and breaking eaves in gabled dormerhead above. Bay to right; bipartite with lugged head at ground floor, single window with plain margins at 1st floor and gabled dormerhead above. Bay to left advanced; hoodmoulded tripartites at ground and 1st floors, blind slit windows with hoodmould in gablehead.

N ELEVATION: blank gable end.

S ELEVATION: gable end.

E ELEVATION: 4 bays, rectangular openings with chamfered margins. Outer bay to right with window at ground and 1st floors, gabled dormerhead above. Outer bay to left symmetrical but with later brick build addition at ground floor, pitched roof, door and window. Inner bay to right; slit window at ground floor and tall window lighting staircase above, entrance door with later brick built porch to right with piended roof and glazing. Inner bay to left; window ground floor small window above.

Glazing partly timber sash, partly modern replacements.

Grey slate, skews, corbelled gablet skewputts, ashlar gablehead stack to N, brick to S. Cast-iron finials to W facing gables.

INTERIOR: not seen, 1996.

BOUNDARY WALLS AND OUTBUILDINGS: brick wall with stone coping to S, rubble stone to E, painted and coursed wall to W.

Flat roof brick outbuilding to NE, gable-ended brick garage (former stable and carriage house?) at E entrance.

Statement of Interest

Original rear of building now fronts West Road.
