Frank Cossell, 1967. Bronze statue depicting locomotion comprised of athletic male figure courant, flanked by accompanying metal hoops of differing sizes, that to right grasped in hand, that to left against shoulder. Statue mounted on pebble-dashed concrete A-frame plinth, with later landscaping at base.
Sited outside Buchanan (formerly Scotrail) House, the sculpture was commissioned to depict the appropriate theme of motion. The A-frame plinth echoes the inverted A pillars supporting the jettied upper floors of the background office block. Public sculpture was actively advocated by the Scottish Arts Council from the late 1960s and 'Locomotion' is an early example of this fresh activity.
