Most of the older buildings of the Castle are to be found in the Citadel, the most notable being the tiny St. Margaret's chapel whose main features are characteristically Norman. It was probably built early in the 12th century (c.1124) by David I in memory of his mother who died in 1093. It may have been originally a private chapel incorporated within a larger complex of buildings which has since disappeared. Converted into a gunpowder magazine in the late 16th century, it was rediscovered in 1845 and restored to its present condition. At the end of the 18th century the ground-level to the south of the chapel was lowered by the French prisoners-of-war, giving it a taller appearance than it originally had. It is the oldest building in the Castle and, probably, in the whole of Edinburgh.
