Archibald Stodart, 1893. 2-storey, 6-bay, rectangular-plan, gabled, asymmetrical plain Scottish 17th century former storehouse and offices with crowstep-gabled dormers breaking eaves. Squared and snecked yellow sandstone with ashlar margins, stone mullions and transoms to windows. Base course, dividing band between 1st and 2nd storey, continuous cill course to 2nd storey, eaves course.
W (PRINCIPAL) ELEVATION: double bay office block to right; gabled bay to left; hoodmoulded semicircular-arched door to left, semicircular-arched fanlight over timber door. 5 tall rectangular lights to right. Canted oriel window to 1st floor left with piended stone roof, arrowslit to gablehead. 3 tall rectangualr lights to right. 6-bay warehouse block to right: square-headed goods entrance to outer left, 2 broad semicircular-arched windows to bays to right, timber mullions and transoms, 4 tall rectangular lights to right, large 4-light window to outer right, timber mullions and transom. 2 mullioned and transomed dormers to upper storey.
E (REAR) ELEVATION: harled, irregular fenestration.
S (SIDE) ELEVATION: harled gable end, partially obscured by abutting building.
N (SIDE) ELEVATION: harled gable end.
Plate glass and multi-pane, timberframe sash and case windows. Grey slates, lead flashing. Cast-iron rainwater goods.
INTERIOR: central hallway, staircase with timber balustrade, plain offices to ground floor left and right. Modern floating ceiling to open-plan loft space to bays to left. Plasterwork cornices, dado and ceiling roses to apartments to bays to right; corbelled stone canopy fireplace to front apartment.
A fine warehouse and offices on the former Clydeside mercantile/shipping area of the Broomielaw built for Robert Brown and Co, whisky exporters and wine and cognac importers. The range to the left of the main, 2-storey entrance block was shown as single storey in the initial plans but these were altered to include the 2nd storey seen today to provide additional loft storage space. The upper storey room with canopied fireplace within the office block was probably used as a tasting room with clients. The small scale and dometstic design of the building suggest that the vacant lot behind the building was once the site of a larger bonded warehouse belonging to the firm.
