Description

1859. Single storey and attic, 3-bay inner lodge. Stugged, coursed granite, base course, polished margins, corbel course to slightly jettied 1st floor.

SW elevation: stone porch projecting at centre with pointed-arch doorway, 2-leaf panelled doors; pointed arch window on return to left; parapet with attenuated ball finials to outer angles. Advanced, gabled bay to right with cross window at ground and hoodmoulded tripartite in gablehead. Bay to outer left with cross window.

NE elevation: projecting, flat-roofed block to right with former door at centre blocked as window, window flanking to left and narrow window to right, blind arrowslit to outer left and door with letterbox fanlight to outer right. Gabled bay to left with cross window at ground and in gablehead.

SE elevation: slightly advanced gabled bay at centre with tripartite window at ground and cross window in gablehead.

NW elevation: raised chimneybreast at centre, flanked at ground and in gablehead by glazed arrowslit windows. Advanced return of flat-roofed rear projection, blank with 3 blind gunloops and parapet.

Timber mullions and transoms to sash and case windows with large square-pane glazing. Graded grey slates. Crowstepped gables with bracketed skewputts; coped gablehead and ridge stacks; lead ridge.

Statement of Interest

Decorative timber latticed garden fence. In 1859 the building costs for East Lodge were estimated at £948.8.0, with the same workmen carrying out the work as at The Croft, 'the carpenter was Watson, the slater Innes, the plumber Farquhar and Gill, the plasterer Mitchell, and the mason Beaton'. Further variant on design style employed across the estate and marking the approach.
