Description

J & W Smith, 1850, circular venison larder. Harled, stugged ashlar granite base and lintel band courses, ashlar dressings. Panelled door in recessed surround, flanked by arrowslit windows, gauze screened; further arrowslits around circumference. 8 clerestory lights above lintel course. Antler trophies at intervals between. Timber bracketed overhanging eaves. Conical slate roof with polygonal louvred, timber ventilator at apex with leaded swept pagoda cap and finial.

Statement of Interest

A group with Game Larders, Ice House, Stables, Pony Stables, The Surgery and Iron Ballroom, Joiners' Workshop.

Further fine larders can be found on the estates at Allt-na-Giubhsaich and Birkhall. J & W Smith sent revised drawings in January 1850, as the earlier designs had been too ornamental and too expensive, the revised estimate was £105. The work was completed by July 1850. Crème de la crème in larder design.
