Description

Said to be mid 18th century, possibly earlier (see Notes). Scots Baroque (former) villa, now part of 3 sided terraced square. 3-storey 3-window, central round shouldered doorpiece with cornice of late 17th century character, arched 2nd floor windows with hood moulding. Low-pitched curvilinear gable with scrolled ends, scroll to west hidden. Principal elevation to square rendered.

Statement of Interest

6 Hope Park Square (originally Hope House) was built by Sir Thomas Hope of Rankeillor. Sir Thomas Hope of Rankeillor laid out a park area on the neighbouring Meadows (originally Hope Park) from 1722 on the site of the drained Borough Loch.

In The Buildings of Scotland: Edinburgh (1991), Gifford describes no. 6 Hope House as dating from circa 1725. McKean in Edinburgh; An Illustrated Architectural Guide (1992) dates the house to circa 1770.

No 6 Hope Park Square is first visible on Kincaid's map of 1784.

Tenements adjoining the house to the east and west were constructed in the mid-nineteenth century, creating the U plan Hope Park Square.

No 6 was Restored by Nicolas Groves-Raines in 1978.
