Brunel’s skew bridge at Rhydycar carried the Vale of Neath Railway over the Glamorganshire Canal. The canal owners requested that the bridge should have a span of 12m. It was built around 1850. The initial plans for the bridge were objected to by the canal company in 1849 due to the proposed narrower span. The line was completed in 1853
