Early C19 with a mid to late C19 shopfront. The building may have older fabric behind. Church Street had some widening as part of the improvements associated with Priory Street and White Swan Court in c1837, but according to the maps the south side of the street had been set back in part previous to this. It is not known whether No. 17 is a complete rebuild or if C17 fabric remains.
Rendered and painted front, probably over brick, roof not visible from the street. Three storeys, three windows. Double depth plan. The ground floor has the house doorway on the left with a panelled door with two glazed panels and overlight, double shopfront with recessed central door, plain stall-riser and fascia. Plain plate glass sashes above, all with stone cills. Plain coped parapet. Rear elevation not seen.
Interior not available at resurvey, apart from the shop premises.
Included for its special architectural interest as a multi-period building and as part of the continuous run of historic buildings in Church Street.
