A probably early C19 rebuild of a C17 house. Church Street had some widening as part of the improvements associated with Priory Street and White Swan Court in c1837, but according to the maps the south side of the street had been set back in part previous to this. It is not known whether No. 23 is a complete rebuild or if C17 fabric remains. This building appears to have undergone an amount of change since listing in 1974.
Rendered and painted front with Welsh slate roof on corner site at junction of Church Street and St. Mary's Street. Three storeys, with one bay to Church Street, one to the chamfered corner at the junction and three further bays to St. Mary's Street. Bays 1, 3 and the upper one of 5 are blind recesses, the others are 6 over 6 pane sashes to the first floor and 3 over 6 on the upper floor. Possibly early C20 shop front, but this seems to have been altered in the late C20, entrance on chamfered corner. House entrance in bay 1 with C19 panelled pilasters but late C20 pediment, 6-panel door with the two top panels glazed. Rear elevation not seen.
Interior not available at resurvey, apart from the shop premises.
Included for its special architectural interest as a multi-period building and as part of the continuous run of historic buildings in Church Street.
