Church of St Peter

A Grade I Listed Building in Coughton, Warwickshire

St Peter: alabaster tomb chest of Robert Throckmorton d.1570, son of Sir George & Katherine Vaux

Uploader's Comments

Sir Robert remained loyal to Catholic faith (as has his descendants ever since) and was probably responsible for the priest holes at Coughton Court; he was grandfather of Robert Catesby of Gunpowder Plot fame. A younger brother, Nicholas, was primarily a protestant and was ambassador to France & Scotland under Elizabeth I. It was his daughter Elizabeth who married Walter Raleigh.
