Description

TEWKESBURY

SO8933 HIGH STREET
859-1/5/228 (West side)
27/07/73 Outbuilding to rear of No.67
(Formerly Listed as:
MYTHE ROAD
(South side)
Outbuilding at and immediately W of
Black Bear Inn)

GV II

Stable or outbuilding. C18 or early C19. Flemish bond
brickwork, tile roof. A small free-standing building at the
back of the plot to No.67, and immediately adjacent to the
party fence to the Black Bear Inn (qv). A 2-storey single-span
structure with gables coped in brick, and a parapet on the N
side, adjoining the Inn. The W end, towards the river, has at
first-floor level a large sash, formerly 12-paned, but reduced
to 6-pane by the loss of horizontal bars. Under this is a
similar opening, modified to accommodate a door and a
casement. Both openings have brick voussoirs, and a very
narrow fluted key - not found elswehere in Tewkesbury. The N
side has a large arch, containing a set-back blocking in
brick, with inserted door. A large external stack with
offsets, cropped above the parapet, has been added to the left
of this arch, and there are remains of stacks at right and
left ends. On the S side, facing towards the Riverside Hotel
(qv) there is a row of shallow casements at ground floor, and
above is a small casement with, to its left, a blocked opening
with voussoirs; on this side the roof comes down to an eaves.
The gable towards the street is in timber-frame, with new
brickwork nogging. INTERIOR not inspected.
