Almshouse row. Circa 1912 by Sir Aston Webb. Red brick with wooden cornice to
plain tiled roofs partially obscured by parapets of window projections, 3 tall
banded brick stacks to ends and off ridge stepped stack to front right. Single
storey 3 projections, one at each end and one to right of centre with tripartite
glazing bar sash windows in each. Quasi-pilaster brick mouldings flanking. The
projection to the left has gable with small gable opening. Between the projecting
parapets the eaves drop down over entrance verandahs, that to the left wider, with
central twisted brick pier. Double casement to rear of each verandah and boarded
doors to sides.
Whiteley Village was provided by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty
old folk and was laid out on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, employing
leading architects of the day.
