Pair of houses. Corner Cottage. Dated 1744 with later additions and alterations.
Roughly coursed limestone rubble; stone slate roof. 3-unit baffle-entry plan. 2
storeys and attic. Irregular fenestration; 3 irregularly spaced and stepped
mid-C20 casements on first floor and one on each side and to far right of
entrance to left of centre on ground floor, all with earlier wood lintels except
centre on first floor. C20 gabled eaves dormers to left and right. Boarded door
under C20 open gabled weatherboarded porch and infilled doorway to far left.
Datestone "BB/1744" above right window on first floor. Integral end stack to
right with moulded dripstone and capping and similar rebuilt ridge stack to
centre. Outlines of roof pitch of former range to rear visible in back wall.
Baytree Cottage projecting to left and formerly divided into 2 cottages.
Probably late C18 with later additions and alterations. Uncoursed limestone
rubble except for slightly projecting section to left rebuilt in regularly
coursed rubble; stone slate roof with integral end stacks rebuilt mid-C20. 2
storeys. 3 windows; mid-C20 casements, those to left bay with leaded lights, all
with earlier wood lintels. Central C20 half-glazed double door under lean-to
slate hood. Small 2-light wooden mullion window to right gable end on first
floor. Interior. Corner Cottage only inspected: chamfered spine beams with ogee
stops to ground- and first-floor rooms, 2 ground-floor rooms to right of large
stack now knocked into one. Staircase behind stack approached through plank door
with H- and L-hinges. Collar truss roof in 3 bays with principal rafters rising
from wall tops. C20 single-storey additions to rear of both houses are not of
special architectural interest.
