HOPTON CASTLE C.P. HOPTON CASTLE SO 37 NE 8/167 - Lower House GV II

Farmhouse, now house. Late C15, remodelled early C17 with later additions and alterations. Timber framed with rendered and painted brick infill on rendered rubblestone plinth; painted uncoursed limestone rubble rebuilding and additions; plain tile roof. Original plan probably an open-hall house of 2 framed bays aligned north-south, floored over and extended to west in early C17 with further bay added to south of original range in late C17 forming T-shape; later 2-storey gabled roughcast addition in angle to rear. 2 storeys. Framing: right wall of original range has square panels, 3 from cill to wall-plate, to north bay and is roughcast to south bay. Early C17 range has square panels, 4 from cill to wall- plate with long straight tension braces to gable end, partly renewed to ground floor. Three C19 cast-iron casements in panels of framing directly below eaves to early C17 part with similar but larger casements to either side of C20 plank door under contemporary gabled porch to left. C20 casements on first floor to right, one directly above the other, in angle with late C17 gabled rubblestone addition, which has C20 casement to each floor. Integral rubblestone end stack to north gable end of original range has C20 brown brick shaft; red brick ridge stack to rear gabled range. Interior. Timber frame exposed throughout: square panels and occasional close studding to internal walls. Right ground- floor room of early C17 range has 2 chamfered spine beams with stepped ogee stops; similar stops to chamfered wooden lintel of stone inglenook fireplace to back wall. Left room has 2 deep-chamfered spine beams. Chamfered spine beam with stepped ogee stops also to back room of original range, which has large open fireplace with plain wooden lintel. Original range has collar and tie beam roof trusses with v-struts from collar to centre and to former south gable end; raking struts from tie beams to principal rafters to north gable end. Smoke blackening visible in roof space to principal rafters and ridge piece suggests that it was originally open to roof. End stack is later addition as original north end truss survives behind rubblestone; late C17 addition to south is also clearly defined. Double-purlin roof in 3 bays to early C17 addition (2 west bays wider) has collar and tie beam trusses. C20 lean-to addition tonorth gable end of original range is not of special architectural interest.
