GREAT HARWOOD ALLSPRINGS DRIVE SD 73 SW 2/69 Allsprings - - II
Large house, built by James Lomax 1838. Rendered (probably sandstone), slate roof, chimneys incorporated in hamper to stairwell which rises through the centre. Five-bay 2-storey facade with double-pile 2-bay rear wing. Symmetrical, in Tudor style; windows of 2 pointed lights with hollow spandrels and hoodmoulds. Two-storey embattled porch has large moulded Tudor-arched doorway with a hoodmould, panelled double doors, fanlight with Perpendicular tracery; a 1st floor string course; and a 2-light 1st floor window. To each side are two windows on each floor, and a parapet rising to a steeply-pitched gablet with crocketed finial. The gables have similar treatment. Behind the ridge of the roof is a large square hamper which has 2-light windows and similar gablets in the front and sides of a high parapet disguising chimneys in the corners. Left wall of rear wing has 2 windows on each floor. Interior: elaborate plaster moulding to ceilings and friezes (now damaged). History: Lomax family of Clayton Hall and Allsprings were principal landowners in Great Harwood; James Lomax built RC church of St. Hubert and Our Lady (q.v.).
