GREAT HARWOOD MARTHOLME LANE SD 73 SE 3/73 Gatehouse at Martholme 11.7.1966 GV II*
Gatehouse, dated 1561. Sandstone rubble with quoins, restored stone slate roof with gable copings and kneelers, finial at left gable, one chimney on ridge, another at right gable. Three-bay rectangular plan. Two storeys; symmetrical front and rear: in centre a wide rounded and chamfered arch (originally open, now glazed), above this a square recess with a cast plaque with shield and helm, lettered at the bottom corners "15" "61"; in centre of 1st floor a large mullion and transom window with 8 round- headed lights; otherwise 2 windows each floor, all with 3 round-headed lights. Rear is the same except that it has no side windows at 1st floor. Left return wall has a similar 3 light window at 1st floor, and pointed light at ground floor. Modern addition at right end, with ex situ furnishings. Restored from derelict condition recently.
