GREAT HAMPTON STREET
Hockley B18
Nos 60 to 64 (consec)
II
2.
A vast works and office block on corner site with Well Street. c1912 red brick
with buff terracotta and yellow and white tile dressings in the Birmingham Arts and
Crafts idiom. Large scale detail but a subtley balanced composition. Monumental
arcading to both elevations, on Well Street rising from ground floor and basement,
screened by railings, to attic storey, but on Great Hampton Street, and splayed
corner, starting from first floor. Close set ranges of narrow windows to attic
storey, deep parapet. The bays are articulated in groups of 2 or 4 by shallow
breaks framed by banded piers breaking up through parapet, the broader ones with
semi-circular arched portals on ground floor, and semi-circular arched windows at the
attic level. Chequered tilework to aprons and in parapets with swept up copings.
The slope of Well Street increases monumentality of arcading in perspective.
