Mid C19 fort forming part of a series of fortifications built to defend Portsmouth
Harbour. Probably constructed about 1860 during Lord Palmerston's 2nd Ministry,
at the time of a scare of war with France. Irregular shape. Surrounded by a bank
lined with red brick on both the inside and outside, part with tiers of arches.
Outside this is a moat, now dry. Centre of Fort now used as an Industrial Estate
and some of arches now occupied by industrial premises.
Fort Fareham and the Iron Bridge form a group.
