Grant and Thorne monuments north of
the Church of St Ann

GV II

2 chest tombs. Early C19. Portland stone. (i) To Archibald
Grant, d.1805. Flat ledger top on second flat slab, plain
square corner pilasters containing inscription panels with
incised surround. The inscriptions in fine Roman lettering;
plain end panels, and simple base, partly sunk. The monument
partly overgrown by ivy; (ii) approx 1m SE of the preceding,
to Joseph Swafield Thorne, d.1846. Flat ledger top on second
slab with triple reeded edge, reeded corner pilasters,
inscription panels with sunk margin and inset corners with
leaf embellishment. Moulded base on platform. 2 nearly
identical monuments in a churchyard where most memorials are
simple headstones.
