II

Late C17 facade. 2 storeys and attic, 7 windows on 1st floor. House
originally of early C17 with alterations up to the present day. High
pitched, tiled roof with 3 gabled dormers having latticed casements.
Deep, modillioned eaves cornice. Brown brick with red and blue brick
dressings. 1st floor windows, sashes with thick glazing bars in flush
box frames, have moulded brick keystones. Central window, in slightly
projecting red brick bag, is lengthened to form door leading out to
small balcony with C17 wrought iron railings, Modern shop fronts to left
and right on ground floor. Steps to central door of 8 fielded panels in
plain, wooden architrave.

Inside several older features. Massive tie beams and collar beams with
close set posts between are visible in attic, whose floor shows a very
heavy central beam running the whole length of house. One 1st floor
room has close studded timber wall with half rail; another has more widely
spaced framing with arch braces. Many heavy oak plank floors remain, and
some Jacobean panelling. Moulded beam of about 1600 on staircase
(which has been modernised). Demoted from glade II* because exterior
spoiled by modern shop fronts,
