Shrine of St. Alban and watching loft.

Alban, a citizen of Roman Verulamium, gave shelter to Christian priest & was converted to Christianity. He refused to renounce his faith & was executed, probably in the mid C3rd, and buried on the hillside where Cathedral now stands. In the shrine security was essential due to the amount of offerings being made to the saint, so in 1400 the watching loft was built on the north side of the shrine, where monks kept watch from above.
