Includes: No.89 Devonshire House BATH ROAD. Pair of houses and attached area railings, now hotel (left) and flats (right). c1800-1820. Ashlar over brick with slate mansard roof to left, concealed to right and wrought-iron balcony. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys with attic and basement and single-storey entrance porch set back to right, 6 first-floor windows (3 per house). Ashlar detailing includes horizontal rustication to ground floor at left and at right forms arched recesses around windows. 6/6 sashes where original, taller to first floor, those to first floor at right (Devonshire House) have tooled architraves to cornices. Second floor band; frieze and cornice over second floor; crowning cornice over attic storey to right. Roof dormers to left. Entrance to left has door with overlight with glazing bars. Porch set back to right return has steps to double doors and overlight with glazing bars between incised Greek key pilasters, frieze, cornice and blocking course. Rear: full-height extensions to each house. Each has 3 tripartite sashes, 6/6 between 2/2, with further 3/3 between 1/1 sash to Devonshire House; otherwise mainly 6/6 sashes; windows to left, first and second floors have blind boxes. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: area railings have cross-and-circle motif; first-floor continuous balcony has rod-and-circle motif. Occupies an important site on the corner of Bath Road, one of the main approach roads to Cheltenham town centre.
