Description

SX 68 NE CHAGFORD

3/13 Butterwell approximately 9 metres
- north-east of Collihole Cottage

GV II

Butterwell built over a natural spring. Probably C17 or C18. Granite. The spring
head is enclosed on 3 sides by large slabs of roughly-squared granite slabs and
another slab forms the flat roof. It is open on the south-east side where another
slab forms a platform in front. Any shelving that existed around the inside has been
removed.
This butterwell, over a spring which still provides water for nearby Collihole
Cottage (q.v.) is an attractive feature of the hamlet which includes 2 important
listed farmhouses.
