House. Early C19, probably earlier core. Plastered stone rubble, parts might be
cob; stone rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; slate roof, maybe thatch once.
Plan: long building facing onto Fore Street to the north-east. It has a 4-room
plan, 2 either side of the entrance hall which contains the main stair. The right
end room is an unheated service room and has now been converted to a garage although
the chamber above has a gable-end stack. The room right of centre has an axial
stack backing onto the garage. The room left of centre has a rear lateral stack and
the left end room has a gable-end stack. 1-room plan service block projects at
rignt angles to rear left of centre. It is easy to interpret the layout as that of
a C16 hall house but no carpentry shows to prove such an hypothesis. House is 2
storeys.
Exterior: apart from a tiny window over the C20 garage doors the regular 3-window
front is concentrated at the left end; ground floor C19 casements containing
rectangular panes of leaded glass and first floor 16-pane sashes. The front doorway
contains a C19 6-panel door and contemporary flat hood on shaped timber brackets.
The roof is gable-ended. The rear wall right (north-west) of the rear block
contains tall 12-pane sashes and the stair is lit by a round-headed sash containing
Y-tracery top glazing bars.
Interior: shows nothing earlier than the C19 joinery detail. Nevertheless no
carpentry is exposed. The first floor rooms have coved plaster ceilings and the
roofspace is inaccessible. Earlier work may be hidden by C19 plaster.
A narrow strip of front garden is fenced by mid C19 cast iron railings with ornate
spear heads and set into low stone rubble footings. The gate is similar.
The Dower House is one of a group of attractive listed buildings in the centre of
Holcombe Rogus Village.
