- The Old School House

House, formerly Rayers Primary School. Circa 1840. Grey-coloured chert ashlar;
stone rubble stacks topped with C19 brick; slate roof.
Plan: now a 2-room plan house facing north onto Fore Street. Each room is heated
by a gable-end stack. It is now 2 storeys although a large window suggests that the
right (west) room at least was open to the roof.
Exterior: irregular 2-window front of C20 replacement fixed pane and casements with
glazing bars. The largest window is right of centre and has a segmental arch over.
It is set across the first floor structure. The smaller ground floor window further
left also has a segmental arch over. The front doorway, near the right end, is a a
Tudor arch and contains the original studded plank door with coverstrips.
Roof is gable ended.
Interior: was not inspected.
This house was formerly Rayer's Primary School, the smaller of the 2 C19 schools in
the village. It forms part of an attractive group of listed buildings in Fore
Street.
