Description

SJ 55 SW CHOLMONDELEY C.P. CHOLMONDELEY PARK

1/29 Gated entrance to Temple
Gardens.

GV II

Gate on north side of Temple Gardens circa 1695 possibly by Jean Tijou
(Jackson-stops) with stonework probably of early C19. Wrought-iron
with stonework surround. The entrance consists of two full and two
half unfluted columns with unorthodox Corinthian Capitals and plain
entablature. The half columns are flanked by short lengths of tooled
sandstone walling with projecting plinth. The two outer openings of
three formed by the columns are filled with wrought iron screens based
on round rods, scrolls, spears and leaves. The matching gate is hung
from built-up metal piers with zig zag infilling and has a flat
overthrow with spears. Gervase Jackson-Stops in Country Life 19 July
1973.
