Road bridge over river and railway, 1931/34 by David Anderson, of Mott, Hay
and Anderson (Westminster), engineers; and Dorman Long & Co Ltd.,
contractors. Riveted steel girder structure with concrete-filled piers;
original woodblock road surface renewed with asphalt. Vertically-lifting
centre span suspended on steel wire ropes from towers and balanced by
counterweights. Concrete abutments with brick facings. Each tower, steeply
ramped on landward side, stands on 4 cylindrical steel piers with timber
dolphins. Counterweight boxes, filled with concrete and steel, suspended on
ropes from sheaves at tops of towers. Lifting span consists of 2 Pratt
trusses, with curved-topped chords linked by braced trusses, and underslung
cross-girders supporting steel-plated decking overlaid with concrete and
asphalt. Operates on Ward Leonard system using 2 electic motors mounted
over middle of lifting span. Deck carries 2-way carriageway flanked by
cantilevered pedestrian ways with steel railings. Approach sections have
panelled steel parapets. When raised, lifting span gives 36m clearance for
passage of river traffic at high water. Single-span bridge over railway at
east end. Inscribed granite block, at east end, records foundation,
designers and builders. The first vertical-lift bridge in England and the
heaviest of its type in the world. Included for industrial archaeological
