3/299 House at SW 41923701
-
GV II
House, roofless. Probably C18, possibly older. Granite moorstone rubble. Probably
originally with thatched roof. Granite monolithic jambstones to doorway.
Probably originally single storey. 2 shallow-depth rooms with stone wall between the
rooms. Left-hand (north) room is on lower ground and has fireplace at left-hand end,
obviously fitted later. Originally presumably heated by some kind of open hearth,
perhaps against the middle wall. Original doorway left of middle to front wall of
lower room, original small window opening in rear wall of same room towards right.
The other room has no fireplace and no window openings, its doorway is at the front
of the party wall. This house, and the nearby house qv, are similar to the 'black
houses' of Scotland and represent a building type almost unknown in Cornwall.
