Farmhouse. C16, altered mid-C17, early C18 and mid-C19. Part timber-
framed with painted brick infill on brick plinth, brick replacement walling
and refacing, part hand-made brick in English bond, plain tiled roofs;
left side elevation has a large external brick stack with sandstone dressings
at base and 3 diagonal rebuilt brick shafts, also large brick stack to main
ridge. Hall and cross-wing type plan, hall on a north-west/south-east axis
with cross-wing at north-east end; inserted stack in former cross-passage
now forms lobby entry; basic plan extended to form complex gabled roofline;
the hall part has 2 large gables at each end of the front elevation, there
is a small dairy cross-wing at the service end of the house and the main
cross-wing at the upper end of the house has an F-shaped roof ridge plan
with 2 small gables at the rear in the angle with the main range. Two
storeys; cellar beneath main cross-wing. Framing exposed in north-east
side elevation; at front of external stack are 2 rows of close-set vertical
studding; to the rear are small square panels, 5 from sill to wall-plate.
Front elevation: refaced during late C19. All windows have cambered heads
and stone sills. Main part has a ground floor 20-pane sash on the right
side, a 20-pane sash on the left and 2 first floor 16-pane sashes above,
beneath the cross-gables; there is a central late C19 door with cambered
head beneath the ridge stack; the main cross-wing gable end has a ground
floor 20-pane and a first floor 16-pane sash window; the dairy cross-wing
gable end has a ground and first floor C20 casement. The older brickwork
is exposed at rear and is of English and a random bond. Interior: front
room of main cross-wing has an elaborate mid-C17 cross-beamed plaster ceiling,
enriched with foliated and egg and tongue mouldings and at the centre of the
ceiling there is a boldly modelled oval wreath. Above the fireplace is
a scrolled pediment with swags of fruit and flowers flanked by Caryatid
figures bearing baskets of acanthus on their heads and appearing to support
the main beams. There is an enriched plaster frieze around the walls with
small oval shields, originally decorated with coats of arms, later covered
with random arms and tinctures and now painted over. The room above also
has an enriched plaster cross-beamed ceiling, the central compartment having
a dentilled cornice. On the first floor landing is a plaster panel with a
lion rampant brandishing a sword and dated 1615. Mid-C17 open well staircase
with column-on-vase balusters, acorn finials on newels and moulded handrail.
The farmhouse retains an unusual number of high quality C17 interior features.
