South aisle stained glass windows to the memory of Rev Charles Hudson, vicar of Skillington. Considered by the mountaineering fraternity to be one of the best amateurs of his time, he was one of a party of seven who were the first to reach the summit of the Matterhorn on 14th July 1865. On the descent, 19 year old Douglas Hadow slipped, and roped together he, Charles Hudson, Michel Croze and Lord Francis Douglas plunged to their deaths 4000 feet below. (well over a kilometre, vertically). The window shows mountain scenes with Enoch -He walked with God and was not, for God took him. Genesis 4.24-. and perhaps a tribe of Israel –He will be our guide even unto death. Psalm 14.18-. The panels underneath have 1, prayer books, candles and a chalice, and 2, rope, ice-axe and other mountaineering gear with CH on a shield. -(Window) erected by fellow mountaineers- is on the brass dedication plaque under it. The window was restored in 1987. (Photo Mar 2008).
