Substantial country house. Early C19, with some later additions. Probably brick,
stuccoed; hipped slate roof.
Plan: the principal rooms are arranged around a central hall that rises the full
height of the house, a central imperial stair giving access to a gallery serving the
first floor rooms. The service rooms comprise the rear portion of the main block,
and are divided from the principal rooms by a corridor to each floor, set
lengthwise, and served by stairs at either end. Front and service rooms are heated
by lateral stacks, the middle rooms by axial stacks placed to either side of the
main stairs. Courtyard and ancillary buildings lie behind the main block. Front
bays and antechamber to porch probably a little later. 2 storeys.
Exterior: parapet with moulded cornice throughout.
Front: symmetrical, 3 bays. Central bay, with 1 first floor 12-pane hornless sash
window, with a portico of 4 Ionic columns and a central panelled door with pilasters
and rectangular overlight. To either side are 2-storey canted bays with three 12-
pane hornless sash windows to each floor.
Left-hand elevation: 2:4:2 window bays, the central bays projecting; 12-pane
hornless sash windows to first floor; ground floor central bays with 3 French
windows; continuous loggia with Ionic columns. Extending to the rear is a lower
wall (rising to first floor level) with 3 false sash windows, and which conceals the
courtyard.
Right-hand elevation: 2:3:2 bays, similar to left-hand elevation, but with no
loggia. A later single-storeyed extension has been added accommodating the present
kitchen, with horned sash windows.
Interior: entrance to stairhall from vestibule marked by a pair of Ionic columns;
imperial stair with stick balusters, fluted newels and ramped rail,"with Vitruvian
scroll to string. These features are continued around the gallery, which has, in
addition, 2 Corinthian columns set above the entrance. Rectangular skylight with
side windows; all ceilings panelled; moulded architraves to panelled doors
throughout. Principal rooms with plaster cornices of various designs and some good
chimmneypieces; especially noteworthy amongst the latter is that to the front
right-hand room, of white marble, the mantelpiece with swag to frieze supported by
semi-naked caryatids, and another to the rear left-hand room (morning room), also of
marble, the frieze with attic scenes supported by caryatids. Contemporary joinery
includes panelled doors and internal shutters.
