Description

ST 01 SE UFFCULME CRADDOCK
4/172 Old Post Office Cottages
-
II
Pair of cottages. Possibly C17 with later alterations and extensions. Plastered
cob and rubble; gable end pantiled roof. Originally a 3-room, through-passage plan
house, the higher end to the left of the passage; the service end has been extended,
probably in the C19. The hall is heated by an axial stack at the higher end, but as
this room was not examined it was impossible to confirm whether or not this is the
original position. Service end heated by an external end stack, as is the service
end extension; all stacks with brick shafts. 2 storeys.
Exterior Front: the early house is 4 window range; first floor with C19 3-light
casement windows; ground floor: 4-light C20 casement window to hall; 3-light
windows to service end and inner room. Half glazed door to passage with rectangular
overlight; C19 latticed porch. The service end extension has two 3-light casement
windows to ground floor only, one of them C19.
Interior (not thoroughly inspected): jointed cruck truss to higher end of hall
where there is also a rear stair, probably a rebuilt winder. Rough ceiling beams to
service end.
