Statue of Hercules wrestling Anteus. c1730. For John Aislabie. Limestone
statue, ashlar pedestal. Overall height approximately 3 metres. The
pedestal has a moulded plinth and cornice. Hercules is supported by a tree
trunk and lifts Anteus high into the air. The statue stands in the focus of
a small semicircular terraced open-air theatre, close to the Rustic Bridge
(qv) and the original southern limit of the gardens. W T C Walker, personal
