Pillar. c1730 reconstructed c1970. For John Aislabie. Ashlar.
Approximately 2.5 metres high: moulded plinth, shaft with 2 courses of
frosted rustication and moulded cornice. Banded ball and cushion finial.
The pillar stands in an area frequently flooded since its original
construction until improvements were made c1966-74. It had sunk and traces
of associated earthworks were lost, the present pool and waterfall being
recent work. The 1962 list description refers to 'C18 stone podium standing
on petrified waterfall and supporting large rusticated ball finial'. The
association with the battle for for Quebec (1759) is not known. Scheduled
ancient monument. W T C Walker, personal communication.
