Belvoir Angels headstone mounted on the outside of the chancel with iron clamps. -Come Ye Blessed-. (ligature on Me) Angel flanked by hour glass and crossed femurs. Lettering with gyred serifs. Here lyeth the Body of James Duick who departed this life October the 25th 1727 Aged 72 yere. -Grieve not therefore for me my glass is run/ It is the Lord and let his will be done/ Youth and old age they seldom do agree/ But these two lived in love and Unity-. This Swithland slate headstone is one of several hundred still existing, all with characteristic winged angel faces and script styles, that were produced by a family of local craftsmen in the early part of the 18th century. Nichols (1795, vol iii part 1) says that in his day there were no headstones showing in the churchyard, but only an handful against the church outside wall, including one on the east wall of the chancel. And that is the situation of this one. (Photo Jun 2015).
