Shops and dwellings. Early C20 front to C17 core. Roughcast; Welsh slate roof, breaking forward over bays; brick stack to left front; C18 brick axial ridge stack to right. Three-bay frame. Two storeys, attic and cellar; four-window range: central 6/1 sashes, flanked by canted bays with 4/1: 6/1: 4/1 sashes; all C20 with moulded cases. Two gable dormers and central flat-roofed dormer, all with paired 2/1 sashes; wrought-iron guards. C20 shop fronts, to left with part-glazed panelled doors; jetty on moulded brackets.

INTERIOR: retains substantial remains of an early C17 timber-framed building with some fine quality timbers. Winder staircase with stick balusters, to attic. first floor: C17 moulded ceiling frame; late C19 fireplace; timber-frame partition walls. Ground floor: moulded ceiling frame; timber-frame partition walls. Cellar: stone spiral stair. Square-panel framing in rear wing. Corner posts survive, first floor front: roof probably original, but only partly visible. Roof to rear wing has clasped principals.

No.52: C19 winder staircase with stick balusters to attic. Attic: plank door. First floor: moulded ceiling frame; C18 wall cupboards; C19 tiled fireplace; three four-panel doors; C19 fireplace; ceiling rose. Ground floor: mutilated ceiling frame. Cellar: massive chamfered ceiling joist; stone-lined.

Investigation by the City of Hereford Archaeology Unit has shown that this was an important merchant's house and occupied a site now covered by Nos 48, 50A and 52 St.Owen Street, (qv).

Much timber-framing remains intact within all three units. To the rear of No.50A is later C17 wing with a lime plaster floor to its attic.
