Wall, gate piers and railings to
west of Middleton Hall

Railings, wall and gate piers to Middleton Hall (qv). C18.
Iron railings on dwarf wall; main wall of red brick.
Iron railings: 32m long abutting wall to S 59m long and 2.1m
high with S gateway. Railings on cement rendered dwarf wall
with Portland stone coping, C20 cement fillet additionally set
round base of railings. Supporting sections with rear stays
have wrought-iron `s' shaped scroll work and twisted flat
finials, intermediate railings have square sectioned spear
points. Wall: of red brick, Flemish bond with shaped brick
coping. 2 intermediate simple brick piers with Portland stone
copings, also pilaster buttresses. Inner side of wall flush
along length. Gateway: has 2 outer piers 12.8m apart and 2
inner piers 6.4m apart, linked by quadrant walls, gates and
iron supports absent. Piers square section of gauged
brickwork, finely bedded with rustication by projecting
Portland stone blocks, 4 to each pier. Outer piers have deep
stone caps with shallow pyramidal tops and a surrounding
frieze of upper and lower ovolo mouldings with prominent
triglyphs and guttae central on each face, mouldings breaking
forward round triglyph. Rear piers similar to those at front
but stone caps missing and replaced by plain C20 brickwork.
Quadrant walls have been rebuilt and have simple brick coping.
Wall continues S of gateway but is not included in this
listing as rebuilt in C20.
The wall and railings and garden wall east (qv) form a group
with Middleton Hall (qv).
